Almazara La Organic – hidden treasure of Andalusia

Katarzyna Kołodziejska Katarzyna Kołodziejska |
Title

There are places in Andalusia that she jealously guards. You won't get there by accident, someone has to show them to you. Today we will discover such a treasure for you: this is Almazara La Organic, the first olive oil mill and museum of the author in the world!

Why "of the author"? This project was created by Philippe Starck, one of the most famous designers and architects in the world, in cooperation with Touza Arquitectos. The mill is the result of many years of work by a talented team that has always focused on ecology and the environment. Therefore, in addition to resources such as a water collection system for irrigation of the olive grove, solar panels and air recuperators that guarantee maximum energy efficiency, sustainable or recycled materials were used.

Almazara La Organic is much more than just a place where olive juice is pressed, from which the best organic olive oil in the world is made. Almazara is a museum that pays homage to olive oil, Ronda, Andalusia and its folklore. As Philippe Starck, the project's alma mater, said: "(Almazara) is like Andalusia: raw, rigorous, real, exaggerated, extreme, timeless, strong, spiritual and passionate. It is a mill and a tool of work, as well as a monumental temple to the glory of eternal olive oil.”

A tribute to the great Pablo

From the facade of the building, a cuboid measuring 30 by 30 by 25 meters, emerges a huge horn evoking the silhouette of a bull, strongly associated with Spain. The creator of the building, Phillip Starck, calls it "the bull". The facade is also decorated with a 12-ton olive tree and a 15-meter-long eye, a nod to Pablo Picasso. This amazing, expressive eye sometimes plays the role of... a chimney. We didn't manage to see the smoke, but nothing is lost, because we will definitely return to Almazara.

Olive Museum

In addition to Picasso, two more figures: Francisco de Goya and Abbás Ibn Firnás, considered the father of aeronautics, also appear in the museum. Interesting juxtaposition, isn't it?

After entering the oil mill through "el estoque" - a 45-meter tunnel in which visitors are accompanied by the sound of falling olives, you can watch the process of transforming olives into EVOO through glass panels. There you will also find a lot of interesting information about the types of olive oil, how to use it, its flavors and its undoubted benefits to our health.

You will discover different flavors of olive oil during tasting in the restaurant. You can also grab a bite to eat there. The menu is very simple and tasty, offering organic products from the farm. If you particularly like one of the types of olive oil, there is a shop on site where, in addition to various types of olive oil, you can also buy interesting, original gifts. Of course, everything is branded "La Organic".

La Almazara – a world reference point in architecture

LA Organic, a mill and museum, add to the splendor of Ronda, which is a must-stop on Andalusia's tourist trails. This oil mill is a world reference in architecture, culture and tourism. The building is a landmark of Ronda in the world, like other iconic buildings designed by important architects, for example the Marqués de Riscal winery in El Ciego or the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, designed by Frank Gehry.
